Building a proper foundation that will not settle or shift takes knowledge and experience. Here is how we ensure your walkway or driveway performs as well as it looks.
Step 1: Site Assessment and Design
We start by evaluating your property drainage, soil conditions, and existing grades. We measure everything and discuss your design preferences. Step 2: Excavation and Grading
We excavate to the proper depth, typically 8-12 inches for walkways and 12-18 inches for driveways depending on soil conditions and vehicle loads. We remove all organic material and grade the excavation to ensure proper drainage away from your home and structures. Slope matters. Too flat and water pools. Too steep and erosion occurs.
Step 3: Base Material Installation
We install multiple layers of crushed rock base material, compacting each layer with heavy equipment. This creates a stable foundation that will not shift or settle. Proper compaction is critical. We use plate compactors and rollers to achieve at least 95 percent compaction. The base typically includes 4-8 inches of compacted Class II road base for walkways and 8-12 inches for driveways.
Step 4: Edge Restraints and Bedding Sand
We install concrete or plastic edge restraints around the perimeter to hold everything in place. Then we spread and screed a 1-inch layer of bedding sand perfectly level. The sand allows minor adjustments when setting pavers and helps lock them together after installation.
Step 5: Paver Installation
We carefully place each paver according to your chosen pattern, maintaining consistent joint spacing. For curved areas, we cut pavers to fit smoothly. We check levels frequently and make adjustments as needed. The goal is a smooth, even surface with no lips or height differences between pavers.
Step 6: Joint Sand and Compaction
After all pavers are placed, we sweep polymeric sand into all the joints. This special sand hardens when wet to lock pavers together and prevent weed growth. We compact the entire surface with a plate compactor to set everything firmly. Then we clean the surface and apply sealant if you choose that option.
Most walkway projects take 2-4 days. Driveways take 4-8 days depending on size. You can walk on your new walkway right away. For driveways, we recommend waiting 24 hours before driving on them to let the joint sand settle properly. We handle all debris removal and leave your property clean.
